Understanding the Neurobiology of Trauma and Resilience

This day long workshop will focus on applying the lens of the nervous system to understanding both trauma and resilience. Applied Polyvagal Theory will support understanding how threat affects physiology, emotions, and behaviors that occur when clients are in a trauma state. Skills to support regulation and resilience for clients will also be covered. This training will include both didactic and some experiential information to support the embodiment of these concepts.

Learning Objectives:

* Participants will be able to recognize and name the three primary nervous system states that result from threat.
* Participants will be able to identify two emotions and two behaviors for each state of the threat oriented three states.
* Participants will be able to list two skills to support regulation of themselves or others.
* Participants will be able to apply three deactivation pathways for the nervous system.
* Participants will learn how to apply the principals of "offering presences" to send a signal of safety to their clients.

Ruby Jo Walker, MSW, LCSW, SEP, CHT from SW Trauma Training Services in Colorado is a highly experienced therapist and trainer who specializes in the neurobiology of trauma and resilience. She has been working in the field of trauma for over 30 years. She also works with a wide range of professionals from various disciplines to provide trauma-informed training. Professionals she has trained include psychotherapists, healthcare providers, trauma support agencies, behavioral health service groups, and human service agencies across the state of Colorado and in the 4 corners region, including the Navajo Nation. She has facilitated over 250 trainings, providing expert guidance to help individuals and organizations better understand and address the impact and treatment of trauma for greater effectiveness in their work.

She is the founder of Post-Traumatic Growth Somatic Therapy, which is a unique combination of advanced somatic therapy practices rooted in the fields of neurobiology, resilience, trauma healing, and attachment theory, using applied polyvagal theory. Her passion lies in helping professionals and clients incorporate neurobiology to bring about deep change and transformation. She is a contributing author of a Norton Press book on trauma treatment modalities to be published in 2025, edited by Dr. Stephen Porges, PhD.

She has also served as a leader on a statewide task force that developed supportive resources for healthcare workers in Colorado during the pandemic, including a website, as well as materials on resilience.
